- Lottie was our first kill pen rescue and we chose her because Dave always wanted a draft horse. We were told that she came from a trail riding outfit where she gave rides to the public. Worked for us. So why would Lottie have ended up in the kill pen? She had a spot near her poll that was oozing. It was a slow, gunky ooze. Antibiotics didn't fix it. We suspected she had a foreign object lodged in there, but after taking her to Dr Bunn's clinic for surgery, we learned that she had a rare condition related to a bursa, so rare that a study was done and it only had two horses. Surgery usually doesn't fix the problem, but it's been a year and she's doing great.
