- Emma Darling, yes that's her real name, is a girl with a past. She was born, raised, and raced in Kentucky where she had a successful racing career, even winning at Churchill Downs, home of the Kentucky Derby, Later she stepped into her role as a broodmare. One of her babies even raced in the U.K. It's hard to imagine how she ended up in a kill pen, but many horses do after they outlive their usefulness. As Thoroughbreds do, Emma has a hearty appetite --- she's working on gaining weight she lost before arriving here. Emma also has a lot of energy. She is a kind horse and will be a good pasture mate but probably not a riding horse. We're happy to keep her here as a sanctuary horse, but we'd consider adopting or fostering her out to the right home.
